PVC pipe is one of our products that is often installed above ground. There are a number of considerations to take into account when installing it above ground.
- Follow local regulations.
- Follow recommended safe work practices.
- Follow proper handling procedures.
- Keep pipe and fittings in original packaging until needed.
- Cover pipe and fittings with a tarp if stored outdoors.
- Inspect pipe for damage prior to use.
- Use tools specifically designed for use with plastic pipe.
- Use a drop cloth to protect finishes in the work area.
Grade and alignment of PVC Pipe must be correct when installing plumbing systems.
The environment and surrounds of the PVC pipe being installed must be taken into consideration such as the setting of the pipe in concrete, whether the PVC pipe is passing through floors and walls, or the pipe is inside a duct. (refer AS/NZS 2032:2006 :6)
Suitable UV protection is required such as painting the PVC pipe with light coloured water-based paints, or alternative protective materials.
Suitable supports should be utilized to restrain the PVC pipe whether they are sliding or fixed supports. The recommended spacing of such supports can be found in AS/NZS 2032:2006:6.2. Horizontal runs require the use of hangers spaced approximately as indicated in tables for individual material shown below. Note that additional support is required as temperatures increase. Continuous support can be accomplished by the use of a smooth structural angle or channel. Where the pipe is exposed to impact damage, protective shields should be installed.
With PVC Pipe installations have provision for expansion or contraction, allow for thermal movement where required. (REFER AS/NZS2032:6 TABLE 6.4)
When joining PVC pipe and fittings with solvent cement, make sure you consistently:
- Cut the pipe ends square.
- Clean any debris and bevel the pipe ends with a chamfering tool.
- Use the proper primer and solvent cement and follow manufacturer’s application instructions.
- Use the proper size applicator for the pipe being joined.
- Rotate the pipe by one quarter turn when bottoming pipe in fitting socket.
- Do not overuse primer or cement in fittings and pipe.
